The abnormal cells in her breast only measured about one-eighth of an inch thick, roughly the size of a standard pearl bead used in jewelry. • Suicide Prevention Month

    September 08, 2023

Eric Higgins was one of those energetic kids who loved entertaining people. As a child, he would make other customers laugh while standing in the checkout line of a store by reading the National Enquirer’s headlines out loud in his most dramatic voice. As he got older, he learned to play guitar and loved playing 1970s rock music, especially “Stairway to Heaven.” He was also very smart. He would take apart anything he could get his hands on, even appliances, and then put them back together, so he could get a better understanding of how they worked. Cathy Celestin remembers all of these wonderful things about her son: his humor, his intelligence, his love of music. She will also never forget the grief and emptiness she felt when he took his own life at the age of 15. “This was a moment that completely affected my character and who I am,” Celestin said. “It taught me to value every minute because you might not have another one.”

  • Minimally invasive technique helps patient recover faster and limits the need for a colostomy bag

    August 08, 2023

Sherrie McAdow retired from her career in education one year ago and has devoted her free time to her biggest passion: teaching ballet and tap at a local dance studio. By this spring, she was looking forward to spending the summer dancing, swimming and visiting the library with her five active grandchildren. Living with a colostomy bag would not have fit into those plans. So, when she learned that she had rectal cancer, she was devastated. Her mother had dealt with a colostomy bag while battling metastatic ovarian cancer, and she didn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Thanks to a procedure that Dr. Jean Salem just introduced to Saline Health System, she didn’t have to.

  • Hospitalist gets first-hand experience in stroke care

    May 01, 2023

It happened not too long after his 44th birthday. Dr. Michael Pafford, an internal medicine doctor working as a hospitalist at Saline Memorial Hospital, wasn’t scheduled to work that morning. As he was getting up to go make coffee, Pafford started feeling nauseous and experienced vertigo. Then, when he spoke, he noticed his voice sounded different. At that point, he knew he had to go to the hospital — not as a doctor, but as the patient. When Pafford arrived at Saline Memorial, he was taken back to get a CT scan. The emergency department activated the AR Saves program, which is now known as Institute for Digital Health & Innovation (IDHI) Stroke Program. The IDHI Stroke Program is a network that connects neurologists with emergency departments across Arkansas to help diagnose and treat stroke patients via telemedicine.
