Saline Health System begins offering robotic-assisted hip surgery

BENTON, Ark. (December 5, 2022) – Saline Health System recently upgraded its robotic surgery assistant so that it could be used for hip surgeries, and the first robotic-assisted hip surgery was performed Nov. 21.

The hospital has been using the robotic surgery assistant for knee replacements since October 2021, and they have been pleased with results, according to Dr. Jeff Johnson, orthopedic surgeon. The robotic surgery assistant guides surgeons during the surgeries by providing precise measurements for the angles of implants.

“If we get the angles and alignment of implants right, we have better motion, better function, less instability, less pain and increased survivorship of implants,” Johnson said. “So, that’s what we are using ROSA for — to make sure that the angles are the ideal angles.” 

The robotic-assisted surgeries are also done using a less invasive anterior approach, which means shorter recovery times and better clinical outcomes.

The upgrade makes it possible for Saline County residents to have surgery done using state-of-the-art technology without having to leave their community, according to Saline Health System CEO Michael Stewart.
