The Beat Goes on 5K race is set for American Heart Month
BENTON, Ark. (Jan. 21, 2025) – On Saturday, Feb. 22, Saline Memorial Hospital is hosting the Beat Goes on 5K. The race starts at 9 a.m. at Saline Memorial Hospital, loops through downtown Benton and finishes back at the hospital.
Net proceeds from the race benefit the Arkansas Foodbank. Registration prior to race day is $25 for adults and $20 for children 12 years and under and for virtual participants. On race day, registration increases to $30 for everyone. Online registration is available at SalineMemorial.org/5K.
“February is American Heart Month, so this is the perfect time to remind everyone how important it is to commit to regular cardiovascular activity to keep your heart healthy,” said Jeannie Otts, the hospital’s cath lab director and member of the 5K planning committee. “Plus, it’s for a good cause, so every step you take toward better heart health also helps support the nutritional needs of people in our community and around the state.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one person in the United States dies from heart disease every 33 seconds, so American Heart Month has been designated as a time to increase awareness of the risk factors of heart disease and to promote living a heart-healthy lifestyle.
“Preventing heart disease means making smart choices today that can pay off for the rest of your life – like eating a healthy diet, staying physically active and knowing your blood pressure and cholesterol levels,” said Dr. Jeffrey Stewart, interventional cardiologist.
All race participants get a free T-shirt, and everyone who completes the course gets a finisher medal. Medals and prizes will be awarded to the top three overall male racers and to the top three overall female racers. The top male and female finisher in each age division will also receive a prize.
Packet pickup will be from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., and there will be music and fun for kids, including a Teddy Bear ER, where hospital team members can demonstrate diagnosing and treating stuffed “patients” to help children learn to feel more comfortable with visiting the hospital and/or clinics.
“It doesn’t matter if you are running, walking or just cheering others on, the Beat Goes on 5K is going to be a fun event for everyone,” said Jeff Bourgeois, the hospital’s interim CEO. “We are looking forward to bringing the community together to celebrate American Heart Month.”
